WTBM: You’ve stated in the past that your shy personality growing up drew you to soft, acoustic sounds inspiring your indie pop sound. Are there any other genres you see yourself stepping into moving forward?
Audrey Price: “Most definitely. I remember in high school, most of my friends were surprised when I told them I made music. I never really started to share my music until senior year of high school, and even then it was just with a few close friends. In the past three years of college, I’ve been able to gain a lot of confidence with my music, and I think that has shifted my genre a lot. I have always loved alternative country–Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch–I grew up listening to them with my dad. Recently I’ve been loving all sorts of rock. Anything loud, I love it. I want my sound to be louder. I keep finding ways to get there. I want it to take up a lot of space. I think as I change as a person, my music is changing with me.”
WTBM: As someone who started songwriting in 9th grade and kept it a secret throughout high school, what advice would you tell someone doubting their creative ability?
Audrey Price: “My first couple of songs were largely about fear and hesitation. I wrote ‘Theoretical’ about wanting to do a certain something and be a certain someone so badly, but ultimately letting my hesitation and doubt get the best of me. What I tell people now, and what I would have told my younger self, is that it is okay to be scared. It’s normal to have doubts and fears. That doesn’t make you weak or any less, but you do have to look at those doubts and say that you will do whatever you want to do anyway. That’s what I have learned. It’s hard, but it’s always worth it. Just trust yourself.”
WTBM: What artists or role models would you say help your creative process and/ or shape your music style?
Audrey Price: “I credit my dad for showing me the coolest music growing up. Fun fact: in sixth grade we would listen to Beyoncé’s album, Lemonade, on the drive to school in the mornings. It was awesome. Aside from that, I grew up on Lucinda Williams, Built to Spill, Smashing Pumpkins, Miranda Lambert, and Gillian Welch. There was no shortage of female musicians on our radio. I was so inspired by those artists, particularly. I thought Lucinda Williams was so cool. The way she sang was just so punk-y to me. I wasn’t the best at saying what I was thinking growing up, but from those artists I learned how to do just that in my songs.”
WTBM: Does your music reflect personal experiences?
Audrey Price: “Yes and no. I used to like writing about things outside of myself. I wrote about people I saw, nature, just anything that inspired me. But nowadays I am writing a lot about myself. I am in a phase of my life where I am being forced to reflect a lot about who I am and who I used to be. It can be uncomfortable, but it’s also a good thing. I am writing about myself even when I think I’m not, which is funny.”
WTBM: Can you give a deeper explanation of the creation of your latest single, “Tell Tale”?
Audrey Price: “I think of this song as Theoretical’s cooler older sister. I wrote this song because I wanted something, or rather, someone, and I wasn’t going to back down from that feeling. I embraced everything I felt for this person and everything I wanted to have with that person and made it into a song. It’s hungry and full of feeling. I love that song more than anything. It was my first song that I recorded in Nashville with ToneDef, a Grammy-award-winning producer (Green Day, Briston Maroney). It was a huge milestone for me, and I am forever grateful for that track.”
WTBM: Can we expect new music coming out soon from you?
Audrey Price: “Yes, you can! I am returning to Nashville this November to record some new music, and I cannot wait to do so. It’s going to be big and loud and not shy in the slightest; that’s all I can say as of now!”
